As the fight to protect Virginia’s moratorium on uranium mining took center stage in Southside last year, the Fairfax Water Authority published a critical report noting a number of mines that could come online in Northern Virginia should the moratorium be lifted. All of these mines are within the Occoquan and Potomac watersheds, which provide drinking water to almost every resident in Northern Virginia.
With so much at stake, Fairfax Water passed a resolution strongly supporting Virginia’s current moratorium. Now, Fairfax Supervisor John Foust has put this issue on the county’s radar, and we urgently need your help to ensure the Board of Supervisors takes the next step and officially opposes any effort to lift the moratorium!
Uranium mining would leave behind huge volumes of radioactive and toxic waste, which has been linked to leukemia, kidney disease, and health problems, for centuries in Virginia. A recent study predicts a spill at the first proposed mining site – a major risk with Virginia’s wet climate and severe weather – could contaminate drinking water for up to two years for Virginia and North Carolina communities. If the General Assembly votes to allow mining within the state, Northern Virginia could soon face a similar risk! But by including support for the moratorium in its legislative agenda, Fairfax County would be able to formally oppose any effort to do so in the coming year.
Mining proponents will likely be setting their sights on Fairfax at any moment in attempt to squash the voices of those concerned with potential contamination of our water. Please contact the Board of Supervisors today to thank the county for monitoring this crucial issue, and urge them to join the over 60 governmental entities that have taken a stance against uranium mining in Virginia. Ask the supervisors to include support for the moratorium in their legislative package.

Because of this risk, Fairfax Water Authority, the Fairfax Environmental Quality Advisory Council (EQAC) committee, and over 60 government entities have supported Virginia’s moratorium on mining. Please join them and protect Fairfax’s water by officially declaring support for the moratorium and opposing any effort to lift it.
